Dr Jed Lusthaus - Ophthalmologist and Eye Surgeon

Dr Jed Lusthaus

MBBS (Adel), MPH (Syd), PhD (Syd), FRANZCO

After completing my medical degree in 2006 at the University of Adelaide, I undertook internship and residency at Concord Hospital, Sydney. I was trained as an ophthalmologist at Sydney Eye Hospital. During my training I was very fortunate to spend time working in Darwin and various outreach clinics in the Northern Territory treating indigenous Australians.

From early in my training I developed an interest in cataract surgery and glaucoma. I completed a glaucoma fellowship under the guidance of Prof Keith Martin at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, UK. I gained valuable experience in glaucoma surgery and cataract surgery. I am a staff specialist at Sydney Eye Hospital where I manage general eye diseases as well as being a member of the Glaucoma Unit. I am also a locum ophthalmologist at Alice Springs Hospital.

Through Sydney University I completed a PhD in 2023 using a new imaging technique developed in Cambridge. The aim of the research is to improve our understanding of why people develop glaucoma. This may lead to diagnosing and treating glaucoma earlier. I find teaching and lecturing very rewarding, and through Sydney University I give lectures to medical students. At Sydney Eye Hospital I provide training to ophthalmology registrars and international fellows. I was a committee member of Glaucoma Australia, helping improve glaucoma awareness. Also, I am a faculty member of Lifeline Express, and provide a service to rural areas of China teaching ophthalmologists.

My other passions include sport, film, classical music, and spending time with my family and friends.
